The story of Studio Black Box really begins with the convergence of two Toronto-based design firms, AD Collaborative & HUB Design Studio. The creation of Studio Black Box was natural evolution stemming from numerous project collaborations over a number of years. And of course, a good fit combined with complementary skill sets and diverse perspectives.
The name Studio Black Box is a metaphor of sorts. Black absorbs all light and the idea of approaching design projects from all the different aspects involved in the product design and development process resonated with us. Studio Black Box takes a multidisciplinary approach with design projects. Where possible, we try to bridge the gap between research, design, prototype fabrication, development, manufacturing, and the environment.
We like to build things and we appreciate the knowledge that is gained from making what we’ve designed. Because of that, we’ve invested in the equipment and resources required to help facilitate this approach. The result is a better, deeper understanding of each product and how that product works in context to the end-user and the manufacturer. This approach also allows us to get products to market in much less time.
